Dog Training Questions

Does anyone have some helpful hints or suggestions on potty training a girl?

Question by Jen: Does anyone have some helpful hints or suggestions on potty training a girl?
My daughter is 16 months, which is close to potty training age. What are some hints that she’s getting close to ready? And what are your stories or things that worked for you to get your little ones out of diapers?

    Best answer:

    Answer by Melissa S
Don’t use pull ups and consider using cloth diapers or cloth training pants during the day. She will need to learn cause and effect, with disposable diapers they never feel wet. When you are home and maybe playing outside stick her in big girl underwear so when she pees she will know the feeling. Also get her comfortable with the toilet, take her to the bathroom with you and sit there together, her on her potty and you on yours.

The average age to potty train in the US was 18 months until 1950, it’s now 36 months for girls and 39 months for boys mostly because of disposable diapers.

Our puppy keeps tearing up his training pads?

Question by entlineman: Our puppy keeps tearing up his training pads?
My wife and I have a 4 month old male papillon and he keeps tearing (digging/chewing) up his puppy training pad that I tape down in his room (bathroom). We leave him plenty of toys, his puppy, 2 squeaky toys. Could it be his nails are sharp, or is he just bored? I caught him donig tonight and swapped him and told him NO Bad dog. Any other advice would help.

First off, hitting a dog is never a good form of punishment.

it doesn’t avoid bad behavior, it just causes other behavioral issues.

Negative reinforcement is known to have side effects sort of speak.

your best bet would be to get positive reinforcement training, Petsmart has good trainers and reasonable prices.

give him more playtime as destructive behavior could be cause by not being stimulated,

try Human pee pads, the ones for humans are more absorbing and harder to tear. Its what I used on my puppy.

Pee pads are a jumpstart to get them use to the out door smell (As they are laced with a pheramone that entices them to pee there, and has a grass smell.)

once you can get them use to doing their business outside, you don’t need the pads for anything more than accidents.

but if they smell the grass on the pads, they’ll think they are outside.

So I switched to human pee pads and he didn’t have hardly any accidents.

Also, keep outside play time and potty time separate.

he’ll be trained faster if you let him know potty time is potty time.

How train dog to stop jumping up on people?

Question by Lighthearted: How train dog to stop jumping up on people?
My problem is I am rarely around when my dog jumps up on visitors to my house when my family is home. How can I train him to not jump up on people at times no one is around? I know how to train him to stop when I am around. Would just training him a lot in other areas help with the jumping?

How do you ease use of a training collar but still keep the dog quiet?

Question by : How do you ease use of a training collar but still keep the dog quiet?
My in-laws have a loud dog problem and want to use a training collar, but my concern is that the dog will know not to bark only when it has the collar on, and it would be pretty ridiculous to keep the collar on forever.

Is there a way to do it so that eventually they won’t have to use the collar at all?

    Best answer:

    Answer by inmyopinion
Use the same command and tone of voice every time you reprimand the dog while the collar is on. Use the command once without activating the collar. Then, if the dog doesn’t abide, repeat the command, but use the collar. Eventually, the dog will associate that command with the results, and recognize that he better listen the first time, or the collar will get him.

    Worked with all my dogs.

WHen is a good time to start potty training boys?

Question by : WHen is a good time to start potty training boys?
I started potty training my daughter when she was 18 months old and now at 25 months old she has very few accidents. My triplet sons are 13 months old and I would love to start potty training them soo, seeing as I also have a 3 month old and that would be helpful as far as costs. What were your experiences potty training and are boys really more difficult to potty train?

    Best answer:

    Answer by 2324
Boys are not any more difficult to train then girls, people just say that because they like having an excuse to wait longer. You should start at 18 months and they will be completely trained at 18 months. Every child I have trained (about 10) as well as me and my siblings started training at 18 months and only took a few days.

potty training stubborn kids..any advice or tips that worked for you?

Question by : potty training stubborn kids..any advice or tips that worked for you?
Ok, so I have been trying to potty train my twins for about 8 months now, they just recently turned 3. Does anyone have any kind of tips that worked for them for potty training stubborn kids?

My little boy loves sitting on the potty and think he will be potty trained first, just still will not tell me when he has to go. My girl will tell me when she is going, but when she sits on the potty and actually goes she seems to get freaked out by it even though I assure her its ok, the other thing is lately she has also started refusing to even sit on the potty… I have tried everything I can think of…. movies on potty time, little potty seats, potty seat for the big toilet, rewards, stickers, treats, timers, putting them on the potty every 15-20 mins, but at that rate we were in the bathroom all day…. any ideas anyone?? lol Im running out of ideas, everyones frustrated and would like to get them partially potty trained by september when they go to preschool
Yes its getting very tiring lol, I just see other toddlers and hear of my friends kids being potty trained by three and here they are three and not trained at all, just dont want them to be four and untrained lol

Unfortunately you can’t force it if they aren’t ready. It really does take time. I did the movies and everything you mentioned, with my son and what i found was best was I just went and put him in big boy underwear. Of course he had accidents, but he got the feeling of what it felt like to “go” on himself. It made him more aware of when he had to go and what to do when he did. Just be patient, and don’t push them or they will just push right back. good luck!

    Potty Training?

Question by Anna M.: potty training?
I’m thinking of buying a kitten during September or October in a city in Russia (I’ll be moving there there in June. We got the plane tickets about 2 weeks ago and they say June 9th). My mom says she doesn’t want to buy kitty litter because she thinks she’ll waste her money and will frequently have to change it and the house will stink from cat poop. She insists that she will only let me have a cat if we train it to use a human toilet but she doesn’t know how. I don’t agree with her and want to buy special litter, but she says it’s too expensive. Do you have a potty-trained cat in the house and if so, how did you train it? Do you agree with me or my mom? Should we bring American pet supplies to Russia?
Bonus (for those extra 10 points!)- Please tell me some good cat facts and jokes or you can just provide links.

i think that is kind of impossible. cats and dogs like to bury there pee and poop. i think you are better off using a litter box. to have a cat you need to be responsible and one responsability of owning a cat is cleaning up after it. littler boxes are like 3 dollars and a scooper is prob. 3 and the litter is probably 7 and you don’t need to use the litter alot. if you don’t want the hassle of cleaning a litter box, then dont get a cat,

    Dog training?

Question by MOI MOI: dog training?
I have a one year old have-ton puppy. I have been having trouble potty training her. I would like to get a fence and a doggy door so she could go outside as she needs, but this is not an option. We trained her to go on the potty pads that we have but she would still pee upstairs and only occasionally uses the pads. We just got back from vacation and picked her up from the dog sitters. She has the option to go outside as she wishes there. We have also tried putting a gate up so she can’t get up stairs. She hates (and i mean HATES) being in her crate, thus crate training is not a very good option. Please, how can I potty train this dog!!! Thanks!
I can’t let her out safely for there is nothing to keep her in. and i will NOT chain her up. I do not want to do ANYTHING crule to my little girl, i love her and would like to do this is best way for her.
She sleeps with me in my room not in the crate
